Trends in Higher Education


Although total grant aid for undergraduate students increased on average 6.3% per year beyond inflation from 2000-01 to 2008-09, average grant aid per FTE undergraduate grew only 3.5% per year, as enrollments increased at an average annual rate of 2.7%.

  • In 2008-09 undergraduate students received an average of $5,041 in grant aid per FTE student. These grants were supplemented by $4,585 in federal loans, $476 in federal education tax credits and deductions, and $84 in Federal -Work Study dollars per FTE student.
  • The proportion of the average financial aid per undergraduate student that took the form of grants was about 61% in 1990-91, 52% in 2000-01 and 49% in 2008-09.
