Trends in Higher Education


In 2008-09 graduate students received an average of $7,558 in grant aid per FTE student. These grants were supplemented by $14,598 in federal loans, $512 in federal education tax credits and deductions, and $72 in Federal Work-Study dollars per student.

  • The proportion of the average financial aid per graduate student that took the form of grants was about 37% in 1990-91, 41% in 2000-01, and 33% in 2008-09.
  • Full-time equivalent graduate student enrollment grew at an average annual rate of 2.0% from 1990-91 to 2000-01 and 3.3% from 2000-01 to 2008-09.
